If you've spent a decade in Los Santos, the natural question about Grand Theft Auto VI is simple: how does the GTA 6 map stack up against GTA 5's? This page compares the two worlds the responsible way, confirmed differences first, then the size claims that exist only as leaks.

The two maps at a glance
The clearest contrast is setting. GTA 5 gives you Los Santos, Rockstar's Los Angeles, surrounded by the rural hills and desert of Blaine County, all modelled on Southern California. GTA 6 moves the series across the country to Leonida, a fictional state built on Florida, centred on Vice City (Rockstar's Miami).
| GTA 5 | GTA 6 | |
|---|---|---|
| Main city | Los Santos | Vice City Confirmed |
| Region | San Andreas (Southern California) | Leonida (Florida) Confirmed |
| Setting vibe | West-coast city + desert/hills | Coastal, tropical, neon + wetlands Confirmed |
| Open world | One connected map | One connected map Confirmed |
| Total size | Known (post-release) | About 2x GTA 5, per Rockstar's head of development (reported) |
What's genuinely confirmed about the difference
These contrasts come straight from Rockstar's official GTA 6 material set against the shipped GTA 5:
- Different coast, different country. GTA 5 is West Coast and arid; the GTA 6 map is East Coast, humid and tropical, with beaches, swamp and waterways front and centre. Confirmed
- Vice City replaces Los Santos as the anchor. Where GTA 5 built everything around Los Santos, GTA 6 builds around Vice City and its surrounding Leonida countryside. Confirmed
- More visible water. Official footage leans heavily on coastline, keys and wetlands, a much wetter world than San Andreas's desert interior. Confirmed

- Both are single, seamless open worlds. This is unchanged: no loading walls, full traversal by car, boat, bike and foot. Confirmed
The size comparison, where leaks take over
This is where most "GTA 6 vs GTA 5" content goes wrong by stating guesses as fact. We won't.
- "GTA 6 is X times bigger than GTA 5." The only multiplier with a Rockstar source is about two times, which head of development Rob Nelson reportedly gave the YouTuber TGG in August 2026 (reported by VGC). He also reportedly put Vice City at about twice the size of Los Santos. Larger multipliers you see online depend on unofficial size figures. Larger figures: per leaks/fan estimates, unverified. Leak / rumour
- Leaked side-by-side overlays. Map-on-map comparison images shared online use leaked or fan-built Leonida outlines, not official cartography. Per leaks, unverified. Leak / rumour
- Region-count comparisons. Claims that Leonida has a specific number of regions versus San Andreas rely on unconfirmed leak geography. Per leaks, unverified. Leak / rumour
Rockstar's reported comparison now backs up what fans long expected: the GTA 6 map is larger than GTA 5's, roughly double. What remains unconfirmed is the exact area and how much of it is water. For the deeper dive on scale, see the map size page.
Which world is "better"?
That's down to taste, not data. GTA 5's strength is the cinematic LA-and-desert contrast; the GTA 6 map's pitch is a living, water-heavy Florida built around the return of Vice City. What we can say is that GTA 6 is clearly a fresh setting rather than a remix of San Andreas, a genuine change of scenery for the series.
